The prayerful veneration of the Mother of God icons is an incredible phenomenon in the Christian tradition. Since ancient times, iconographers have portrayed her image with tenderness and mercy, trying to render the infinite love of the Virgin to humanity.

The Holy Tradition of the Church says that the first iconographer who depicted the Mother of God was the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. The Holy Virgin proclaimed that the grace of God will abide with her images. This is how the first icon of the Mother of God appeared.

The holy image of the Theotokos

Religious icons traditionally represent the Mother of God in a peaceful manner. Her oval face features wide-open deep eyes; she is dressed in a purple omophorion, with three eight-pointed stars on her forehead and shoulders. The presence of these three stars is symbolic. They reveal the everlasting virginity of Mary before, during, and after the Nativity of Christ. Another significant symbol is the veil covering the head of the Virgin. It is generally colored red to emphasize her suffering and holiness.

Types of the Theotokos icons

The icon of the Virgin is undoubtedly one of the most beloved images in iconography. In Orthodox tradition, there are five major types of religious icons depicting the Mother of God:

· Eleusa — Mary holds the Christ Child who gently touches His face to hers.

· Hodigitria — the Virgin is represented as a guide to Christ, pointing toward Him.

· Panakranta — the Theotokos is sitting on a throne with Christ on her lap, expressing the royal glory.

· Agiosortissa — Mary is portrayed alone, facing to the left, with her hands held out in prayer.

· Oranta — the Virgin is depicted with her hands in an ornate position.

The iconography of the Mother of God is rich and symbolic. Many of her icons are considered miraculous and serve as a source of light that grows hope in the hearts of all the faithful.
